Pre-treatment and Painting
Vehicles today consist of a wide variety of materials including:
- Aluminium
- Steel
- Galvanised steel
- Magnesium
- Various plastics
Various coatings are applied to these substrates Each coat of paint performs a particular task
OEM Paint-Layers
The 3 key layers of the paint finish consists of:
- Primary coat
- Filler / Intermediate coat
- Topcoat (water or solvent based paint and Clearcoat)
OEM Paint-Drying Process
- The high temperature (approx. 180°) drying process after application ensures that the coat is chemically cross-linked and workable, i.e. that it can be sanded.
- The Intermediate drying process (“flash-off”) is time given for liquid components to evaporate, before further coats are applied.
Pre-treatment
- Primarily serves to ensure good adhesion on the relevant substrate
- Phosphate›→ Substrate adhesion
